Submission Guidelines

Canary Collective is a submission-based online magazine that publishes unsolicited work from creatives worldwide. Please read our guidelines before submitting.

Overview: Canary Collective DOES NOT accept work(s) with hate speech/imagery of any kind relating to homophobia, racism, antisemitism, sexism, oppression of varying groups of people, glorified violence for the sake of violence against any gender/gender/race of any human being. We are a magazine for ALL people, but if you’ve got hate in your heart...cut that shit out.

Canary Collective does not accept previously published work. We will consider submissions posted on your personal website, blog, or social media platform. If your submission is accepted elsewhere, let us know, and we will remove it from consideration (and congrats if that’s the case!).

Sometimes the creative process can get tricky, and with images sent to us, we might have to do some alterations (cropping, resizing, etc.) for either aesthetic purposes or image size/color restraints. Submitting your work to us gives us creative liberty to make these changes, but if you insist on your work not being altered, please reach out and we will work together to ensure your art is displayed accurately.

We encourage you to submit simultaneous submissions! Please send a maximum of 4 works in the same email and document (preferably PDF, Word or Google Docs).

If you have been published in Canary Collective, we ask that you submit again once every other quarter so everyone gets a chance to have their work(s) featured.

When submitting work we ask that you list titles of the work with corresponding file names and your name listed in the file name. Example: Doe, John_Flight of the Concords.png/jpg. Please list the titles with a description of medium used or if submitting a piece of writing list the genre in which your work falls.

Mediums we are currently accepting:

  • Digital art: We are currently working on narrowing down which digital art genres we will accept. However, you’re welcome to submit what you have and help us determine our guidelines in this area.

  • Photographic art: Documentary, landscape, portraiture, nude, digital and will only consider video art in short films of 15 minutes or less or a video artist’s reel.

  • Visual art: Any form of medium with applications such as:

    • Oil, acrylic, tempera, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, chalk, graphite/colored pencil, pen and ink on canvas, paper, fabric or anything we find oddly impressive and unique.

    • Three-dimensional mediums with techniques of carving, casting, modeling and construction.

    • Mixed art mediums include collage, assemblage, found objects and art journaling.

Please send us high-resolution images if you submit artistic work(s). We ask that the photos are at least 300 DPI. If you are choosing to submit work from another copyright holder, please send us written confirmation that you are allowed to use their work for publication. (I.e., if you are submitting under photography and are the subject in the photos, we will need written consent from the photographer to publish their photos, along with their first and last name so we can credit them.)

  • Written word: Creative writing, non-fiction/fiction short stories, flash fiction, prose, poetry, myth, graphic novel (excerpts), essays, journalism, journalistic styles and much more.

For poetry, the max word count is 1000. For other written works, the minimum is 750 and the max is 2500. We are open to any subject and any style – we just ask if you are submitting a longer, prose-like piece (or two), that it is written in AP format and heavily proofed before you submit it. If we decide to accept your work, you then have the opportunity to revise your work. We understand typos happen, and we are open to fixing them for you; we do not disregard any pieces that have minor misspellings. Please keep in mind: work submitted that contains a significant amount of spelling and grammatical errors will more than likely be declined. We believe if we heavily alter your work, it will essentially not be your work. We encourage you to resubmit in the future if this is the case.

*All subject matter submitted is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Bio: When submitting, please send us the name you would like to be published alongside your work. We also ask that you send us a 120-word max bio stating who you are and a little bit about the work you’re submitting. Feel free to send us your website and/or social media handle for a possible feature in our magazine, website, or social media. Please ensure the image(s) you send are high resolution and at least 300 DPI.

You may remain anonymous if you don’t want your name out there. If you choose to do so, Canary Collective will respect your privacy and not share your name with anyone outside the publication.

Response Time: If your work has been accepted, you will be notified within 1-3 months. We will respond to everyone to ensure we have received their submission and will look it over. However, we cannot accept every submission. We encourage everyone to submit their work for consideration when submissions are open.

Copyright Information: You will retain all ownership rights to the copyrights of your work. Canary Collective adheres to all local, national and international copyright laws. We will only accept work written by the author and/or copyright holder. By submitting, you are permitting us to use it for future printed/digital distributions: publication, social media, website and newsletters.

Payment: Canary Collective is a brand new and small publication. Therefore we do not have the funding to pay contributors. We will grant you credit and publicity throughout social media, along with being featured in our magazine. Thank you for understanding!
